Most freaking expensive lip balm ever?

I'd been eyeing off this little gem for almost 2 years now but I never bought it as the only place to buy it in Australia is at Mecca Cosmetica. Everyone knows that makeup (and skincare) is a huge rip off here which is why I normally buy of all my stuff online in the US and have it shipped over here. Even then, I still resisted buying this as after shipping costs, it was still really expensive. The lip balm that I'm talking about is the By Terry Baume De Rose and it used to retail for $92 but Mecca Cosmetica have started to reduce the prices of some of their products to "be more in line with international prices" (still a rip off though) and it's now retailing for $84. I know that it's still expensive but I couldn't resist it any longer!

The lip balm sits in a heavy frosted glass pot with a gold lid. It's absolutely gorgeous and it sits on my bedside table as I refuse to carry it around in my bag. As it's potted, I would feel really icky putting my fingers in it when I'm out and about. Who knows how many germs I have on my hands after holding onto poles on public transport and touching money and stuff. I use it after I shower and before I go to bed.

Pretty gold lid :)

The lip balm is actually surprisingly really hard. I was expecting it to be a lot softer but I kind of have to really work it to get enough lip balm to put on my lips. I'm thinking that it might have hardened up as it's winter at the moment so I'm hoping that it'll soften up when the weather starts getting warm again. It has a really light rose fragrance. It's not overwhelmingly strong but it's definitely noticeable even when it's on the lips.

Now to be honest, I'm not completely sold on it. I keep trying to forget that I spent $84 on it as I have $4 Nivea lip balms that do a way better job. My lips have been a bit dry recently and this lip balm hasn't done a huge amount to relieve that. I still have some peeling skin on my lips (I do exfoliate them every now and then) and this doesn't do anything for that.

Whilst I wouldn't repurchase it for myself, I think that it's a gorgeous lip balm to have sitting on your bedside/makeup table like a pretty perfume bottle and I think that it'd be a really cute present for someone. It's something that I'm sure most people would never buy for themselves but it would be well received as a (birthday?) present. Just because it hasn't worked amazingly for me doesn't meant that other people wouldn't love it. I've read so many positive reviews of it which is why I really wanted it so it does work for some people.

What's the most expensive lip balm that you've ever purchased?

  1. Wow o_o I could never buy a lip balm that's over $10, let alone $80 ahaha.
You would expect that it would be amazing though :/ But it is gorgeous to look at.

  2. Wow that's expensive!! I wouldn't fork out anything over 20 bucks for a lip balm tbh haha, but that pot it's sitting in is really gorgeous though!

  3. That's a crazy price for a lip balm! I agree that it's packaging is gorgeous though.
I actually didn't know that Mecca reduced prices- it's definitely a good thing that they have but I still wish our prices were the same as the ones in the US haha

    1. They reduced the prices for a number of things but not by much! It's still better than nothing though :)

  4. I've heard a lot of hype about this product but I'm just not convinced it's worth the price tag! Glad that your review basically confirms my belief. :)

  5. Holy moly! That's like the Lamborghini of lip balms! Hopefully it softens when the weather warms up a little. Might end up being more moisturizing too..

  6. I've never heard of this product but holy, that is ridiculously expensive O_o Great review though, I've gotta say I'm quite happy with my cheap and cheerful Carmex and Nivea lipbalms!

  7. I got a sample of this from Mecca Maxmia, it's a pretty decent sized sample too. Mine's really soft, though? Even in the middle of winter it's never really hard like you mentioned. I agree, I would never actually pay the retail price for the full size. I use it more for my cuticles than as a lip balm, because as you said it doesn't really do much for dry, chapped lips. Nivea Lip Butters all the way!

    1. Really? I have to swirl my finger in the pot heaps before enough gets on to coat like my bottom lip! I love the Nivea lip balms in the stick versions! It's so much more hygienic.

  8. Yikes!!! As gorgeous as this is, it's a bit too much for me, I think! But soooo pretty! xx

  9. I got the sample pot and like Alina says, it's very soft, almost like the Nivea lip butters although not quite. I have other lip balms I have to really swirl my finger on to get a sheer coating of product but never this one. I wonder if you got a dud jar? It might be worth asking, especially for $84! I would compare it with the tester at Mecca. Good luck!

    1. That's so weird :/ I pulled out the small sample they made me from the tester (but I forgot about) and it's soft but the tester is similar to mine... maybe it's something to do with it being a large amount compared to a sample?

  10. I would never buy lip balm that's so expensive omg unless I get a sample and see if it's that amazing compared to others XD

Alot of luxury brands are like that, expensive not because it's effective but it's priced so high because it's aimed at certain consumers who only buy the brand for the sake of loyalty etc. *Fashion marketing classes taught me some things* haha. But the packaging is very pretty though ^^

    1. Ooh that's an interesting point. They've definitely priced themselves out of the market though.. I can't see many people buying it!

  12. Such a shame that is wasn't amazing - for $84 you'd be expecting something amazing. It does look really lovely though x
