Lush Ocean Salt Review

The last time I was at Lush, Ocean Salt was recommended to me by one of the sales assistants as I was after a body exfoliant/scrub. Ocean Salt is actually a facial scrub that can also be used for the body.

It's a thick scrub full of 2 sizes of (pretty large) salt crystals and has lime, coconut, grapefruit and sea salt in it. It's a vodka based face scrub that's absolutely amazing. It doesn't need to be refrigerated like some of the Lush face masks.

This is what it looks like when you first open the pot. I can't put my finger on what it smells like.. but it's very "fresh".. a bit like the beach? Salt and lime?

Lush Ocean Salt

It's freaking blue! and so so pretty :) All the salt crystals sit on the top and you need to mix them in into the base before you start using it. I used a spoon (you can use a fork or knife as well.. it doesn't really matter) and gave it a few swirls to mix it all up.

After 2 uses
I first used Ocean Salt on my whole body in the shower and I didn't find it very effective. I think a loofah or one of those shower puff things with some Palmolive or Johnson & Johnson could do the same job. It's also really expensive to use as a body scrub. Ocean Salt retails for $20.95 for a 120g pot or $35.95 for a 250g pot. I picked up the larger one as it was definitely a better value.

Ocean Salt is amazing as a facial scrub! You have to make sure that you rub it on your face gently as I found the larger salt crystals to be a bit scratchy if I rubbed it in too hard. It makes my skin feel so clean and fresh. I swear my skin also looks brighter :)

This is seriously a holy grail of mine. My Dermalogica microfoliant isn't cutting it (as it doesn't feel like it's actually doing anything to my face) and I find the St Ives apricot exfoliant to be too harsh. Ocean Salt sits perfectly in the middle :) Not too harsh yet it actually feels like it's exfoliating my face.

Lush should make Ocean Salt without the chunky salt crystals in it and market it as a cleanser as I would buy tonnes of it! The pretty blue colour gets me every time :)

Repurchase? Yes! Yes! Yes!

    1. You can try out the products in the lush store before you buy it. Maybe you could do that to see if your skin will react to it? The only thing is that they demonstrate it on your arm and not your face so it might be hard to tell...

  4. I have been really liking Dermaologica Microfoliant because it's so gentle haha, so I feel like this might be too harsh on my skin!

    1. I feel like the Dermalogica microfoliant is too hard to use! I have no idea how much water to mix in and it feels like it's not doing anything to my face :(

I think the salt crystals have been melting slowly into the base so it's not as coarse as when I first started using it.

    2. Oh I see! I just wet my hands and my face and shake the container once into my palm and I find that is enough to do my entire face. I try not to get it too watery or it doesn't feel effective. If it's not damp enough from my hands it sort of goes more paste like as I rub it onto my damp face. I hope that makes sense!

  5. Wow this is great! The blue colour makes it so unique and interesting- it makes me want to try it :P I love the Dermalogica microexfoliant though as it is so gentle and feels like it does exfoliate my face! But I think I might have a look at this facial scrub the next time I am in Lush :)

    1. I got suckered in by the blue colour :P I'm so happy I got it though as I love it. I said in a comment above (to Mishelle) that I find the Der
Dermalogica microfoliant hard to use.. I can't figure out the water/powder ratio.

    2. I meant the Dermalogica not "Der" haha

  6. Have you tried the Benefit facial polish? I love that it has fine beads - so its a more gentle exfoliant! Plus it smells great haha

  8. I've been avoiding St Ives like a plague after reading far too many reviews saying how horrible St Ives is.

Is it quite easy to mix the salt and base together? What do you use to mix it? What does it smell like?

P.S. BLASPHEMY! Dermalogica Microfoliant is my favourite everyday exfoliant! I use it every morning!

    1. I think I'm going to edit my review to include your questions :) It's super easy to mix the salt and base together. You just use a fork or knife or something and give it a few swirls. It kind of smells like... I dunno.. I can't put my finger on it.. a hint of salt.. maybe a bit grapefruity? It smells good :) and really really "fresh" like the beach?

I think I just don't know how to use the Dermalogica microfoliant correctly.. my paste is always too thick or too runny.. =/

  9. Great review Jen, I'm so keen to check this out! About how long does a 250g pot last you? And whats the expiry like? (I always end up throwing some Lush products away because I can never finish it all before the expiry!)

    1. Thanks :) The pot will last quite awhile if you're only using it as a facial scrub. The expiry is also a year away (next December) so you'll definitely use it up on time. I know what you mean about throwing Lush products away. I've had to do it too! It's such a waste of money if you don't finish it :(
